There are two categories of sound in film diegetic and non-diegective.
Diegetic is the sound that the character can hear.
Non-diegectic is sound that characters cannon hear, but the audience can (it adds atmosphere/makes you feel emotions.)
EXAMPLES:
Diegetic; dialogue, ambient sound & sound effects.
Non-diegectic; music, voice over & sound effects.
