18 mark essay:

Question- "How does diegetic and non diegetic sound represent the target audience in your 2 case study music videos"

The diegetic and non diegetic sound in my two case study music video. The vamps// Somebody to You! (target audience; USA/UK females aged 12-24 years in social grades C1-E) and Little Mix, Black magic, (target audience, USA/UK, Females aged, 9-20 in years C1-E).

Laura Mulvey  (1975) argued that women in the media are used as erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience. In the music video; ' Somebody to you,' lots of girls are presented as sex objects, and who want to been seen attractive and males that want to see them as attractive.
The male singers in this video are getting attracted by these girls.  Heres an Example.. " Thinking about a way to get you off my mind" This fits her theory. It makes males being able to link to this music video.

Alpha Male:
Gauntlett (2002), argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they have shown as alpha males who control the action with violence.

In the song; "Somebody to you" there is lyrics like this; "I used to be so tough" "But every time  I look at you, I just don't care," that fit the theory because these lyrics shows that he isn't really caring about the girl. This links to the theory of being tough and alpha males. In my second case study's song, (Little mix Black Magic) has lyrics of being the alpha males; "But he aint got time" From this quotation it shows that the boys don't have time for the girls, and its linking back to the quotation. This represents males and females in the audience who can relate to these stereotypes.

Is your lover playing on your side?

But he ain't got time

At a knocked down price
Hey

Just to make him sweet
Crystal balling
Just to help him see
What he's been missing

So come and get it
While you've still got time
Hey
Get your boy on his knees
And repeat after me, say
Take a sip of my secret potion
I'll make you fall in love
For a spell that can't be broken
One drop should be enough
Boy, you belong to me
I got the recipe
And it's called black magic
(And it's called black magic)

If you're lookin' for Mister Right

To change him over night

StereoTypes

Theorist Andy Medhurst argues the media create stereo types of groups/places through..
"Magnification of negative aspects of the group." He says this is is done to make the ruling class group ( straight, middle class, middled aged, white males.)

Gender:

Race/Ethnicity:
"Whiteness has been naturalised, as though it is an invisible 'norm.' When it is of course an ethnic group like any other.

S.Hall said in 1981, blacks are stereotyped as, 'The social problem" and this is a stereotype that has been embraced by hip hop culture.

Youth: Stanley Hall (1904)
The common mood of teenagers is a state of depression.

Criminal activity increases between the ages 12&24..

Young people are extreme and need excitement; "Youth must have excitement and if its not at hand in the form of moral intellectual enthusiasms it is more prone to be sought in sex; drink or drugs.

Dick Hebdige (1988) argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors; Youth as fun" and Youth as a trouble maker"
Old Age/Disability:
Evans (1998), drawing on the works of freud and other psychoanalysis, states:
"Disable people are seen as childish, dependant and underdeveloped and are regarding as 'other' and are punished by being excluded from ordinary life. Thus popular images and rhetoric of disabled people abound which comfort us with people who are imperfect, helpless, disgusting, dribbling -  a threat to rigid ego boundaries.

Class:
Richard Putsch (1992)  who says class males in the media are presented as "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well intentioned but dumb. In almost all working class series, the male is flawed, some more than others. Keith Gandal's in 2007 he said that target audience are drawn in by the; 'sentimental rags to riches story"
