18 mark essay:

Question- "How does diegetic and non diegetic sound represent the target audience in your 2 case study music videos"

The diegetic and non diegetic sound in my two case study music video. The vamps// Somebody to You! (target audience; USA/UK females aged 12-24 years in social grades C1-E) and Little Mix, Black magic, (target audience, USA/UK, Females aged, 9-20 in years C1-E).

Laura Mulvey  (1975) argued that women in the media are used as erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience. In the music video; ' Somebody to you,' lots of girls are presented as sex objects, and who want to been seen attractive and males that want to see them as attractive.
The male singers in this video are getting attracted by these girls.  Heres an Example.. " Thinking about a way to get you off my mind" This fits her theory. It makes males being able to link to this music video.

Alpha Male:
Gauntlett (2002), argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they have shown as alpha males who control the action with violence.

In the song; "Somebody to you" there is lyrics like this; "I used to be so tough" "But every time  I look at you, I just don't care," that fit the theory because these lyrics shows that he isn't really caring about the girl. This links to the theory of being tough and alpha males. In my second case study's song, (Little mix Black Magic) has lyrics of being the alpha males; "But he aint got time" From this quotation it shows that the boys don't have time for the girls, and its linking back to the quotation. This represents males and females in the audience who can relate to these stereotypes.

  1. Parts of this enter higher grade boundaries in terms of applying relevant theory and using lyric quotes. However, this needs to flow better. Targets:
    1) Look at how connectives are used in the example to link the essay together, then apply what you have learned to your own essay.
    2) Make sure all band names and song titles start with capital letters.
    3) Link all points back to why the lyrics represent and attract the target audience.
    4) Complete the analysis for your second song.
